How getting crafty and creative helped my business

Like so many movie franchises, I’ve been wondering if my business, my routines, or maybe just my mojo needs a reboot. I’m guilty of focusing on small tasks and procrastinating the big picture goals on my to-do list. And I easily let overwhelm and distractions get in the way.

I’ve been taking a course called Get Your Mojo Back with Melyssa Griffin, who is one of my favorite experts in all things business and mindset. I’m working hard to refocus my goals and my energy, and each week we need to go on a “creative quest,” which I think is such a great way to reconnect with yourself and your passions.

One of the quests was a challenge in which I had to go shopping, spend just $20, and then create something! As a crafty person, this had my name all over it. I’m not a Martha Stewart, but I love crafting and scrapbooking, and it’s something I haven’t done for myself in a long time. Here’s what I made.

Walking around AC Moore, I was drawn to this little sloth guy, and I’ve been wanting to get one of these clip frames for ages. Yellow is my favorite color so that was another easy choice. I did have some supplies in my stash at home as well. One of the requirements for the challenge was to schedule the quest and stick to it. And I gotta say, taking time for myself and doing something fun, in spite of the seemingly endless to-do list, was amazing.

Thinking about what inspires me and doing something creative just because gave me such a charge! I felt more motivated and excited about my work. And now I have this awesome sign on my desk to inspire me. I smile every time I look at it. I’m going to add more of these sessions to my calendar.

Even if you’re not the crafty type, you can still take some time to make something for yourself. Draw a picture, paint something, cut up some magazines. Don’t feel any pressure to be perfect, just do what feels right. Make something just for you, and try to remember what it was like to be a kid in art class. Just don’t eat the paste!
